When to use glazing medium for oil?

Mediums are not always necessary, but sometimes they bring incredible value, like this ENL glazing medium for oil paints.

If you prefer transparent paints that provide glazing effects, using just oil as a thinner may not be good enough as oil doesn’t provide that much flow. This medium brings out the richness of pigments and promotes permanence. As its optical properties do not deteriorate with time, it protects the top layers of paint. It also brings viscosity to the paints.

The closest analogue to ENL glazing medium is retouching varnish, but most likely it will have turpentine oil or white spirit inside that may cause headaches and other health issues.

This product is absolutely non-toxic and perfect for painting indoors.

Ingredients:

  • Turpentine Gum,
  • Thickened Linseed Oil,
  • Beeswax,
  • Lavender oil

Perfect for final layers… and it smells deliciously.

I used this medium for final glazing layer with dark and light colors including white. The medium is absolutely transparent, easily moveable. Drying time depends on the color used and is comparable with other mediums used for glazing. This is a professional grade product, which I highly recommend to professionals and students.

Just tried that one for glazing locally over some spots of the week drying oil painting. Love the result! It blends very easily with the transparent and semi-transparent paints and goes very smoothly over the textured strokes. Glazing gives colours freshness and more contrast values. Usually I use just thin paint for glazing thined with the turpentine blended with linseed oil but it gives more matt finish to the fresh spots after drying. Although, it looks a bit more glossy than the previous layer in the begging but it seems to look more consistent after a while.

I recently received the new glazing medium from from Rusarts,. I was looking for a more traditional glazing medium that was Turpentine based and was capable of keeping the richness of many oil colours..I was using the glazing medium over a Grisalle. The issue I found with most Glazing products was they muddled the glaze over a Monochrome or understudy. The new glazing medium can be applied very thinly and still have a great effect of depth .. when using your grey scale..and oil glazes. I highly recommend this new glazing medium. I am impressed with its drying time.. depending on The oil colour and its abilities too keep depth too oil colours. A good investment for a student or professional artist

I had the opportunity to try out this medium for myself and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of it.

I’ve found it gives a very thin paint film with an even dispersion of pigment. It’s very controllable and stays where you put it (some other glazing mediums I have used tend to bleed).

It’s a great product and I highly recommend it. If you do any glazing on your oil paintings (or have previously been put off glazing due to sub par commercial mediums) then get this!
