What is gilding?

Generally speaking, gilding is an application of a very fine layer of gold on a prepared surface. It can be metal, wood, plaster, stone, porcelain or some other materials. Some artists use gold sheets in fine arts too and Gustav Klimt is one of the best examples.

In a technique that involves brushes artists apply a special glue, put a fine foil-looking sheet on top and brush the surface to spread gold evenly, without air bubbles. If your brush is too hard, you’ll simply remove some gold with it. If a brush is not wide enough, you may not have time to finish spreading before the glue dries.
