White goat hair characteristics

  • Normally white goat brushes have long hair, which makes them unbeatable for washing techniques
  • Goat hair is porous, so it holds much more water than any other natural or synthetic brush. Even more than squirrel brushes. Apart from squirrel hair, goat brushes hold and release water very gradually, so that no dripping occurs
  • What about softness, goat brushes are moderately soft, but stiffer than squirrel brushes
  • One of the key characteristics of goat hair brushes is high elasticity with a low springy level. In other words, they bend very easily and with no effort, but after you lift a brush up from the surface, the hair doesn’t go back to its initial shape right away. That’s why usually artists alternate sides of use: one movement with one side, the other movement with the other

White goat brush use

Goat brushes are normally associated with watercolours as the softest medium. They don’t work for acrylic or oil as washing out these heavy paints from the gentle goat hair without damage to the brush is not doable. However, goat brushes are widely used for gilding, water-based varnishing and in mixed media works.

White goat brush storage

After use clean goat brushes with water and soap, remove excess of water with a soft paper towel and let it dry in a horizontal position.
