What is an Alkyd Glazing Medium?

• Alkyd resin: A synthetic resin derived from oils (or oil-modified) that dries faster than pure oil (linseed, poppy, etc.). It provides a somewhat resinous binder that speeds curing.

• Glazing medium: Used to make oil paint more transparent, allowing one to apply thin, luminous layers (“glazes”) over dried or semi-dried paint layers. Ideal for optical effects—depth, richness, subtle color shifts.

So an alkyd glazing medium is a medium that helps you do glazing faster (since it dries quicker than traditional pure-oil mediums) while still maintaining the transparency needed for glazing work.
