Sauce is a dry artistic material intended for graphic work on paper, including tinted paper. It is applied using hatching techniques and blends smoothly on the paper’s surface. If needed, shading can be blurred with a damp brush. To tint paper, a small amount of sauce can be ground off the chalk, diluted with water, and applied to the paper using a brush or sponge.
Corrections to the drawing can be made by gently removing the sauce from the paper’s surface with an eraser. For long-term preservation, the finished work may require additional fixative.
