How to choose drawing materials: Sanguine – must have art supply for artists

The word sanguine comes from Latin sanguis meaning blood. This material has being known in arts for centuries. Our ancestors drew with sanguine mineral rocks in Palaeolithic age. Renaissance artists drew with natural sanguine called red chalks. Nowadays sanguine is a warm reddish-brown chalk made of burnt sienna pigment (PBr.6 or PBr. 7) and clay.

Due to its softness and warm color sanguine is a very popular medium for life drawing. For example, Leonardo, Rafael, Rubens, and Fragonard chose sanguine as a favorite drawing material. In 17-18th centuries sanguine was used as part of Three chalk technique, which included sanguine, charcoal, and white chalk. This technique was successfully applied for portraits, life drawing, and sketches, and was considered as a transition from drawing to painting.

We always have high-quality sanguine in stock. Podolsk Art Center produces the softest chalks. A little bit harder sanguine is manufactured by OLKI and Koh-i-Noor.
