How to choose drawing materials: Drawing sauces vs. regular chalks

Sauces are unique drawing materials, because they combine all benefits of highest quality drawing chalks and low dust technologies. Sauces are made of natural pigments, clay, and limestone. Being applied on paper, they provide opaque soft layer, which can be easily blended or smudged.

Apart from other kinds of chalks sauces can be used in both dry and wet techniques. Dry technique implies just regular drawing on paper. Usually after a work is done no fixative necessary if handled with care. Soft and natural colours make sauces and ideal medium for life drawing and portraits.

Wet technique implies dissolving chalks in water and painting with them as with watercolours. Another technique suggests dry drawing and blending afterwards with a wet brush. As a result colours become richer and lines sharper, like drawing with ink. When a wet layer dries it’s possible to work in either wet or dry technique on top.
